For Beth, inclusivity is at the heart of Colchester’s creative community and it’s something she finds genuinely inspiring.

Born on Mersea Island just south of Colchester, Beth studied painting at Brighton university and creates bold, contemporary abstract pieces in a rented studio in the city. Originally the Old Police Station (it still bears the scribbles of some of it’s less than honest patrons) it’s a remarkable space and made for the perfect backdrop to capture this selection of photographs.

Beth is passionate about her art and hugely engaging to talk to. Her style is quite different from other artists in the area; she’s driven by bold colours and graphic design instead of coastal views and seascapes. It’s this authenticity and self awareness that shines through in her work and sets her in good stead as she gears up for her first exhibition.

Colchester and its creative community is an inspiration to Beth, who finds the inclusivity and collective will to succeed to be quite a beautiful. Although it’s perhaps not always obvious, in fact you sometimes need to scratch the surface a little, the city is brimming full of creative talent.

The vibe is eclectic and welcoming to all, from open mic nights and dance events, through to creative writing, poetry and drawing, Colchester’s creative side is bubbling and with Beth and others like her driving things forward, that bubble shows no sign of popping.
